Symptoms of PCOS include:
* Weight gain or inability to lose weight.
* Excess hair on the face or body. You may notice "side burns", hair on your chin, upper lip, back, chest & belly. This is known as hirsutism
* Thinning hair on the scalp/ male pattern hair loss.
* Irregular periods. Many women experience missed periods while some experience them too often.
* No periods
* Infertility
* Dandruff
* Severe mood swings / Depression
* acne
* Pelvic Pain
* Elevated cholesterol and/or high blood pressure
* Sleep apnea
* Skin tags/ excess skin folds in arm pit/neck area
It is possible to experience just one or all of these symptoms and not all women will experience the same symptoms. The most common symptom is irregular period and infertility.
No single test can show that you have PCOS. The following is an example of what steps your doctor take to diagnose you with PCOS:
* A thorough medical history and examination to check for symptoms such as excess hair and/ or acne.
* A trans-vaginal ultrasound of the uterus, ovaries & pelvis.
* A Papanicolaou test (Pap-Smear).
* Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (hCG) -Pregnancy Test.
Blood Tests to Check For :
* Testosterone
* Androgen – can block ovulation and cause acne, hair growth on the face and body, and hair loss from the scalp.
* Prolactin – plays a role in a lack of menstrual cycles or infertility
* Cholesterol and triglycerides – high levels can be especially unhealthy for a women with PCOS.
* Glucose tolerance & Insulin levels – determine Insulin Resistance (IR)
* Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) to check for an for over/underactive thyroid.
* Chemistry screen – to check kidney and liver function and glucose levels.
Don’t be discouraged. My ex and I tried to have kids for 3 years. He ended up cheating on me and impregnating the other girl. Soon after that I learned I had PCOS and I have a 9 month old son without using fertility treatment. My biggest concern is that you first find out if you have PCOS or not. If left untreated, your health can suffer long term risks. Good luck to you.
I don’t think that you can go by symptoms at all. I was totally convinced that I had PCOS but I have had multiple Dr.’s say I don’t.
I highly recommend seeing a Dr. about it; only clinical tests can begin to try and determine if you have PCOS, and even then it’s not always for sure.
Good luck!
Some symptoms of PCOS are being overweight, inability to lose weight, thick around the mid section… (alot of girls have a tire around there waste as most people call it). Hair growth on the face such as neck, chin etc. Usually lack of ovulation and long cycles. Usually those two go hand and hand.
You really have to go see a doctor to get diagnosed. More than likely they will run some test on your hormone levels to determine if you have it or not. If you have alot of these symptoms plus I know there are more I just can’t recall what they were cause I didn’t have them.
And to give you hope I suffered from PCOS from about age 16 till I got pregnant at age 21. I had unprotected sex that entire period of time with my husband and it just never happened. I didn’t have cycles very often and it just never seemed to happen. Then one month I’d been sick for the entire time and thought I might have come down with something. They of course did a pregnancy test even though I told them it was a waste and guess what it came out positive. So it took about 5 years but eventually it happened!
Best of luck to you.
Some symptoms are; much facial hair, starting your period at an older age than usual, smaller mammary glands than counterparts, and difficulty conceiving. These are some of the symptoms, but a woman needs to see d doctor for testing to see if any of these are actually being caused by PCOS.
