i have had a blood test today to see if i have PCOS witch i think, i have the signs of pcos. im trying for a baby aswel will they put me on clomid straight away or will they need to do more test ie. scans and more blood tests??

They will probably try Metformin first – if it doesn’t work, then they might move on to Clomid.
You might have an ultrasound to see if you have polycystic ovaries – but contrary to other answers you DO NOT have to have polycystic ovaries to have PCOS…they are just one of the many symptoms of the disease. You can have polycystic ovaries and not have PCOS.
I started Metformin in September of 2005 and I got pregnant in January of 2006, (but sadly lost the pregnancy…which is another sucky symptom of PCOS – high miscarriage rate).
I am now on 850mg of Metformin a day and I just finished my first month on 100mg of Clomid (didn’t work) so we’ll up it to 150mg next month. The most prominent side-effects with Metformin are tummy troubles. I have found that if I am strict on when I take it (same time EVERY day) it helps. With the Clomid I took it before I went to bed and that seemed to minimize those side-effects (nausea, irritability, cramping, etc)

They usually do an ultrasound to see if you have cysts on your ovaries.

As far as starting Clomid right away, I doubt it. First, they need to find out if you are ovulating. Clomid is used to induce ovulation. But, women with PCOS might be able to ovulate on their own (depending on the severity of the PCOS) or by other measures (diet, weight loss) Sometimes docs will start PCOS patients out on a drug called Metformin to help regulate insulin levels. I have heard of several women with PCOS getting pregnant using Metformin only.

they’ll do an ultrasound to see your ovaries more likely and look for cysts, but you should be able to take Clomid soon when prescribed by your doc, best of luck and many women with PCOS conceive, you can also ask a fertility specialist online for free and find others going through PCOS who conceived, try this website, FertilityTies

Go to the library and borrow the book "Fertility and Infertility for Dummies"…. Honestly its amazing.
I have been reading up online for months now but learnt more from than book in an hour!
It goes through each individual stage of testing indepth into every test and explains it very very clearly and simply.
I also have PCOS. My blood test didnt confirm this, an internal ultra sound did. I have now been refered to a specialist.
they will do more tests first
hsg – where theinserter dye in your tubes to check there all clear
if you have pcos then they will prob order an ovary scan just to be sure
then a sperm test.
that should be it then it’s onto clomid xx
i have been off the pill since dec 2006 to try for baby.come may in 2007 i didnt get a period and i though i was pregnant and did a test come back negative then come july didnt get period for 4months and then i went to the docters and they did tests to say i have pcos.am on metformin 500mg for 3 times a day.i got a period in nov jan feb and skipped march and got one in april, and in may and skipped june and got one in july.
i went to see my specialist in may and am also losing weight aswell witch is good.i went for a blood test in june to see if am ovulating on my own and am not so i was told to start on clomid as soon as my period comes so i started it on 4 july with the pills.
my prosterone level is 24 witch is good and the nurse wants it to be 30.i did my blood test on day 21 but according to her i didnt ovulate she thinks it was later then that.so i need to call the nurse as soon as my periods comes.wish me luck
Hi, I have PCOS, in order to diagnose it, they dont just use blood tests, as it is usually done regularly to see if you are ovulating. They then usually send you for a internal ultrasound, and from this they usually make a diagnosis, my fertility doc said that theere is no definate diagnosis, but they say that if you have two of three things, then you have PCOS, and these are: excess weight around the middle, excess hair and lack of ovulation. I have all three. I asked him to prescribe me clomid straight away, convinced that I woulod need that drug to make me ovulate, but he said that he would start by using metformin – one month later – bang – I was pregnant!!! and wehn I spoke to him about it he said that metformin was very very successful – so my advice – if you do have it – their is sooo much you can do to help yourself – and metformin helps with this – the best thing you can do is to loose weight – and I use to hate docs who said that to me – but its true – i lost about 2 stone and I am convinced that if I hadn’t have done then the metformin wouldn’t have worked!!!
