Can anyone recommend what the best type of diet is for a PCOS Sufferer?

I have PCOS, some people have suggested a low GI diet but I have no idea what it is.
I should add that I am not necessarily looking to lose weight on the diet but to use the diet to help relieve some of the symptoms. For example I ate a meat and carb combination last night and I had extreme stomach pain all night like a very nasty form of indigestion.

hey there, im a pcos sufferer too! low gi, and the south beach diet are a couple of things that have been mentioned to me too. i am attending slimming world where i have lost 2 stone since august. it involves ‘red days’ and ‘green days’ – red days you eat as much meat as you like, lots of veg. green days you eat as much carbs as you like, and lots of veg. you also have measured amounts of dairy/bread/syns (sins/chocolate stuff etc) each day. i find this diet really works. you get all the food groups you need to stay healthy, and it allows your body to lose weight effectively, and you are not starving yourself!
the south beach diet i believe is a bit like the atkins where you cut out alot of your carb intake. although this does help you lose weight, it is never a good idea to cut out on a major food group. as for the gi thing, i know that all foods have a ‘gi index’ – a numerical value so you eat the things with a low value. i couldnt tell you which ones are the low ones though!
i would recommend slimming world as a diet option, but if not, try to eat meals that do not combine potatoes/pasta/rice with meat. keep them seperate if possible. remember to eat dairy (not too much cheese though!), and beans and small amounts of bread. eat as much fruit and veg as you like – try to fill up on these, they are fine!!!! oh – diet drinks like diet coke are ok…..but will still rot your teeth. fruit juices are in reality quite fattening simply because of the sheer volume of fruit used in them! fresh fruit is best. water is great, especially for pcos sufferers.
oh, its worth talking to your gp about metformin for you pcos. it can not only help alleviate symptoms, but also helps with your weight loss when eating healthily.

The best diet is a basic diabetic diet or a low carb diet. The important thing is to eat healthy carbs and balance them out with proteins.

When the PCOS is treated properly, all of your symptoms may not disappear, but they should improve some. It will also be a lot easier to lose weight (and keep it off). Our bodies work against us when we try to lose weight on our own, making it nearly impossible to lose weight.
Here’s some basic PCOS info that’s important and might help with your weight loss goal:
The underlying cause of PCOS is insulin resistance (IR). The best treatment for PCOS is going on an insulin sensitizing drug such as metformin (1500-2550mg per day) combined with a low carb diet and exercise. There are a few important things to know:
1. Many women "pass" the test for IR, but still respond positively from the metformin. No one knows exactlly why..my thought is that the test is not a sure fire way of detecting the IR.
2. You must be on a high enough dose of metformin. I’ve heard women complain that their bodies dont start working even though they’ve been on metformin for awhile. Some doctors are hesitant to up the dose past 1500mg…but for some of us it takes more. I don’t respond until my dose is around 2000mg a day.
3. It can take a few months on the correct dose, before your body is regulated.
4. It is important to treat your PCOS even if you are not trying to get pregnant. There are higher risks for many things (high blood pressure, blood clots, diabetes, and many other things) when you have PCOS, but if it is treated properly, then those risks are lowered.
