Causes Of Yeast Infection

Personal Health Coach

There are a lot of topics which women hate to talk about – part of the reason is because “society” makes them taboo – but for women (that’s you and I) that live these issues, getting adequate information is the key to prevention, treatment and cures.

What is a vaginal yeast infection?

A vaginal yeast infection is irritation of the vagina and the area around it called the vulva (vul-vuh).

Yeast is a type of fungus. Yeast infections are caused by overgrowth of the fungus Candida albicans. Small amounts of yeast are always in the vagina. But when too much yeast grows, you can get an infection.

Yeast infections are very common. About 75 percent of women have one during their lives. And almost half of women have two or more vaginal yeast infections.

What are the signs of a vaginal yeast infection?

The most common symptom of a yeast infection is extreme itchiness in and around the vagina.

Other symptoms include:

  • burning, redness, and swelling of the vagina and the vulva
  • pain when passing urine
  • pain during sex
  • soreness
  • a thick, white vaginal discharge that looks like cottage cheese and does not have a bad smell
  • a rash on the vagina

You may only have a few of these symptoms. They may be mild or severe.

Should I call my doctor if I think I have a yeast infection?

Yes, you need to see your doctor to find out for sure if you have a yeast infection. The signs of a yeast infection are much like those of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like Chlamydia (KLUH-mid-ee-uh) and gonorrhea (gahn-uh-REE-uh). So, it’s hard to be sure you have a yeast infection and not something more serious.

If you’ve had vaginal yeast infections before, talk to your doctor about using over-the-counter medicines.

How is a vaginal yeast infection diagnosed?

Your doctor will do a pelvic exam to look for swelling and discharge. Your doctor may also use a swab to take a fluid sample from your vagina. A quick look with a microscope or a lab test will show if yeast is causing the problem.

Why did I get a yeast infection?

Many things can raise your risk of a vaginal yeast infection, such as:

  • stress
  • lack of sleep
  • illness
  • poor eating habits, including eating extreme amounts of sugary foods
  • pregnancy
  • having your period
  • taking certain medicines, including birth control pills, antibiotics, and steroids
  • diseases such as poorly controlled diabetes and HIV/AIDS
  • hormonal changes during your periods

Can I get a yeast infection from having sex?

Yes, but it is rare. Most often, women don’t get yeast infections from sex. The most common cause is a weak immune system.

How are yeast infections treated?

Yeast infections can be cured with antifungal medicines that come as:

  • creams
  • tablets
  • ointments or suppositories that are inserted into the vagina

These products can be bought over the counter at the drug store or grocery store. Your doctor can also prescribe you a single dose of oral fluconazole (floo-con-uh-zohl). But do not use this drug if you are pregnant.

Infections that don’t respond to these medicines are starting to be more common. Using antifungal medicines when you don’t really have a yeast infection can raise your risk of getting a hard-to-treat infection in the future.

Is it safe to use over-the-counter medicines for yeast infections?

Yes, but always talk with your doctor before treating yourself for a vaginal yeast infection if you:

  • are pregnant
  • have never been diagnosed with a yeast infection
  • keep getting yeast infections

Studies show that two-thirds of women who buy these products don’t really have a yeast infection. Using these medicines the wrong way may lead to a hard-to-treat infection. Plus, treating yourself for a yeast infection when you really have something else may worsen the problem. Certain STIs that go untreated can cause cancer, infertility, pregnancy problems, and other health problems.

If you decide to use these over-the-counter medicines, read and follow the directions carefully. Some creams and inserts may weaken condoms and diaphragms.

If I have a yeast infection, does my sexual partner need to be treated?

Yeast infections are not STIs, and health experts don’t know for sure if they are transmitted sexually. About 12 to 15 percent of men get an itchy rash on the penis if they have unprotected sex with an infected woman. If this happens to your partner, he should see a doctor. Men who haven’t been circumcised are at higher risk.

Lesbians may be at risk for spreading yeast infections to their partner(s). Research is still being done to know for sure. If your female partner has any symptoms, she should also be tested and treated.

How can I avoid getting another yeast infection?

To help prevent vaginal yeast infections, you can:

  • avoid douches
  • avoid scented hygiene products like bubble bath, sprays, pads, and tampons
  • change tampons and pads often during your period
  • avoid tight underwear or clothes made of synthetic fibers
  • wear cotton underwear and pantyhose with a cotton crotch
  • change out of wet swimsuits and exercise clothes as soon as you can
  • avoid hot tubs and very hot baths

If you keep getting yeast infections, be sure and talk with your doctor.

What should I do if I get repeat yeast infections?

Call your doctor. About 5 percent of women get four or more vaginal yeast infections in 1 year. This is called recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC). RVVC is more common in women with diabetes or weak immune systems. Doctors most often treat this problem with antifungal medicine for up to 6 months.

Polycystic Ovarion Symptoms During Pregnancy

Personal Health CoachYou are pregnant!  Congratulations!  You may have PCOS (polycystic ovarion syndrome) but you beat the odds and are now pregnant.  But what symptons may you have during your pregnancy?

Unfortunately even PCOS sufferers who get pregnant should know that a pregnancy does not always progress without complications. There are several factors which should be monitored by your doctor and/or gynecologist – the key is to stay in touch with your doctor! Ensure that you do have regular check-ups and if things feel funny or something does not feel right SEE THEM RIGHT AWAY! Of course we don’t want to alarm you, or anyone for that matter – but that baby growing inside you is precious and we want to ensure that both you and baby are safe.

So What Are The Risks?

Medical experts say women with PCOS are at an increased risk of developing gestational diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), pre-eclampsia and blood clotting disorders during pregnancy.

Pregnant PCOS sufferers are also more likely to experience miscarriage, pre-term birth or have over-size babies.

Studies have placed the miscarriage rate among pregnant women with PCOS at between 45 and 50%, compared to 15 to 25% among the normal female population. While this figure may seem scary and intimidating, it’s important to remember that steps can be taken to prevent and treat these disorders.

Now these are the worst case scenarios – speaking from experience (I have several friends who have PCOS and who had children) it may not happen to everyone – but the more information you are armed with the better choices you can make. One women I know suffered with PCOS for years and gave birth to a healthy baby boy that was just the right weight and was born one day later than the expected due date. She had absolutely no complications at all. Their son is healthy, and vibrant!

What Can You Do?

First and foremost ensure that you get adeqate medical care. You should see your doctor and/or gynecologist or OBGYN regularly and follow the schedule that they provide you. If they want to see you weekly – go weekly. If they say monthly is OK, then they are giving you their expert opinion. Listen to them. They care about you, and your baby.

Most treatment for PCOS is aimed at stabilizing your hormones to increase your chances of achieving and maintaining pregnancy. Your doctor will also monitor your blood pressure at regular intervals and look for early-warning signs of diabetes and (later in the pregnancy) pre-eclampisa. Certain drugs may also be used to prevent blood clotting.

In my friends case (her name is Sabrina) she was told that she had preeclampsia but because she had to have a c-section it wasn’t an issue.

ovarian-cysts-cureNext and perhaps even as important as regular medical care – THINK POSITIVE!

It is a well known fact that stress affects our bodies in many ways. It can alter our moods and play havoc with our hormones. Being anxious about a PCOS pregnancy is very understandable, but by staying calm you could be increasing the chances of a successful outcome for you and your baby.

Remember that high stress levels are associated with hypertension.

Do what you can to be well-informed, communicate with your doctor frequently and follow his or her instructions. Apart from that, the most important thing you can do is try not to worry. Some gentle and relaxing activity to get you out and about, like swimming or yoga, could be what you need to take your mind off things. Ask your doctor if it is OK for you to go swimming, do yoga or any other type of exercise. Most doctors agree that exercise during pregnancy is good – but since you are already at a heightened risk ensure you get their professional opinion.

What Are Fibroids?

fibroids-women-smilingFibroids.

You may have heard the term used many times, perhaps your gynecologist has mentioed it to you as well.

Maybe a girlfriend has mentioned it to you, or said that they have fibroids.  Although fibroids may sound scary and it may be confusing due to the lack of information available, this post will help to answer some of your questions about uterine fibroids – or fibroids.

We will also include some links to external sites that may provide more information about fibroids.

  • What are fibroids?
  • Who can have fibroids?
  • What causes fibroids?
  • How do I find out if I have fibroids?
  • What kinds of problems can fibroids cause?
  • If I have fibroids, what should I be careful about?
  • What treatments are available for fibroids?

What are fibroids?

Fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) tumours that grow in, on or outside of the wall of the uterus. They usually range in size from as small as a pea to as large as a grapefruit.

Who can have fibroids?

About 20-25% of all women have fibroids, and they are very common in women over 30.

Women over the age of 35 have between a 20 and 40 % chance of having fibroids.

Black women are 3 times likelier than other women to have fibroids.

Fibroids are more common in women who are significantly overweight and in women who have never had children.

Fibroids are more common in women towards the end of their reproductive years, and they often shrink after menopause.

What causes fibroids?

Although no one knows the exact cause of fibroids, their growth seems to be related to estrogen production. If you are pregnant or taking birth control pills or menopausal estrogens, fibroids may grow more quickly because of the increased estrogen level in your body.

How do I find out if I have fibroids?

Your doctor might find one or more fibroids during a routine pelvic exam or prenatal ultrasound. If this happens, the doctor may simply note this in your file, and perhaps monitor this during your regular check-ups.

Most women who have fibroids are not aware of them. Most fibroids cause minor or no symptoms and don’t require treatment.

However, you might be among the estimated 1 in 4 women who have fibroid problems that affect your quality of life and require treatment.

What kinds of problems can fibroids cause?

The common problems caused by fibroids are:

  • long, heavy menstrual periods with excessive bleeding which, in some cases, cause anaemia;
  • chronic pelvic pain;
  • problems with urination or constipation, caused by large fibroids crowding the bladder or lower intestine; and
  • pain during intercourse.

In more severe cases, fibroids may also cause:

  • problems with fertility; and
  • repeated miscarriage.

If I have fibroids, what should I be careful about?

If you have been diagnosed with fibroids that cause a lot of discomfort, you should discuss this with your doctor before taking any medication that contains estrogens, such as birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy. Your doctor will probably want to monitor you carefully.

What treatments are available for fibroids?

For women with small fibroids, some doctors may recommend treating the symptoms, such as discomfort or increased monthly blood loss, rather than treating the fibroids. To control growth of fibroids, the doctor may suggest stopping any medication that contains estrogen and may suggest alternatives. For women after menopause, fibroids usually shrink because the level of estrogens decrease, and the symptoms may decrease or disappear.

Until recently, doctors often recommended hysterectomy for women with fibroids that caused excessive bleeding. Fibroids are the reason given for an estimated one-third of the 60,000 hysterectomies performed in Canada each year.

Hysterectomy means removing the womb and sometimes the ovaries as well.

Now there are options for treating fibroids other than hysterectomy, such as:

Hormone therapy, such as Lupron or “GnRH agonist”, mimics menopause to shrink fibroids temporarily. This method could help women near menopause who can follow the treatment until their natural menopause. The possible side effects are the same as in menopause.

Myomectomy is a procedure that removes fibroids while leaving the uterus intact. Depending on the size and locations of the fibroids, this procedure can be done through abdominal incision, with laparoscopy or through hysteroscopic resection. It is still major surgery and requires lengthy recovery time. The major drawback of this method is that fibroids often return.

women-fibroidsUterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a process that involves shrinking the fibroids. The doctor uses fibre-optics to guide a tube to troublesome fibroids, and injects small plastic particles into the blood vessels that serve the fibroids. This blocks the blood supply to the fibroids. Although this technique is less invasive than surgery, little is known about its long-term effects, especially on future fertility.

While these different methods exist, it may be difficult to find a surgeon who can perform them in. To find out if this procedure is available to you, speak to a fertility specialist or radiologist.

The good news for women with fibroids that cause them pain is that there are more treatment options now than before.

How To Remove Wrinkles From Your Face

So when we’re talking about removing wrinkles, we are not talking about the wrinkles in your blouse/top/slacks/dress or any other apparrel.  Nor are we talking about the wrinkles in your significant-others clothing.

We’re talking about looking young, and looking sexy!

Vanity ladies, its all about us! So is youthful skin at any age possible? I’m telling you YES, it is possible!

First lets look at wrinkles and how they form. Get rid of the root cause, and we’re laughing!

Wrinkles form as we age. Our face begins aging soon after we cross our twenties. It begins with fine lines on the face. As we age, the fine lines become deeper. At the same time our facial expression makes permanent changes in the skin. We develop laugh lines, lines on the forehead, etc. As we age the collagen that is the main constituent of our dermis begins breaking down.

So what is collagen?

Collagen is a protein. It is mainly found in the dermis, the layer below epidermis (top layer) of the skin. this collagen in the dermis supports the epidermis. without the support of collagen the epidermis would collapse on the muscles and bones. The collagen gives us the plump and young look. Collagen forms the structure on which the epidermis rests. You can think of pillars in a building that support the roof – collagen does similarly to support the epidermis.

So why does Collagen break down?

As we age, the collagen begins breaking don. Sun is the main culprit (do you use sunscreen when you go out ladies?). As the collagen breaks, the skin develops wrinkles. The skin sags… we’ve been there and done that.

When you are younger, the collagen is replaced fast. But as we age, this replacement becomes slow. So there is insufficient collagen in the dermis and we begin looking old.

What do you do? Spend hundreds on high-end store products from name brand parfume houses OR look at the banner to the left. A thirty-day FREE TRIAL to an anti-wrinkle cream that works.

TCM To Treat PCOS

Personal Health CoachZhong Xi Yi Jie He Xue Bao. 2004 Mar

Integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine should make new contribution to the reproductive health of women

Yu J.

Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai 200011, China.

The Obstectrics and Gynecology Hospital attached to Fudan University has made great achievements in the clinical and experimental study of integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine in the past 45 years.

Study on induction of ovulation with acupuncture revealed the relationship between circulating estrogen and central beta-endorphin, and suggested that the depletion of central beta-endorphin resulted in the release of GnRH and ovulation, and the main indication for acupuncture treatment was pubertal dysfunctional uterine bleeding. Acupuncture was also successfully used to treat anorexia nervosa.

The successful treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) with Yu’s Tonifying Recipe for tonifying the kidney and resolving phlegm was found to be related to the elevation of serum FSH which resulted in ovulation.

Good result was obtained in hyperinsulinemia pattern of PCOS treated with Tiangui Recipe for replenishing the kidney and activating blood.

In studies on patients and animal model, Tiangui Recipe was found to decrease peripheral androgen and insulin levels and lead to central regulation of proopiomelanocortin, neuropeptide Y and leptin receptor, as well as regulation of neuro-endocrine-metabolic network.

Thus it can promote ovulation and reduce body weight. In the studies, a new way to classify PCOS was suggested.

Gengnianchun Recipe for women with postmenopausal syndrome was found to be effective in increasing estrogen receptors (ERs) and ER mRNA in hypothalamus and peripheral organs and regulating neuro-endocrine-immune-metabolic network in patients and aging rats. Gongtai was effective for controlling menorrhagia under the mechanism of regulating endometrial prostaglandins. The researches mentioned above indicate that illness is the disorder of some key-links in the life network of the patient which may be affected by factors from the environment. And this idea is different from the ideas in traditional Chinese medicine and biomedicine.

It indicates that woman in subclinical health state has already got something incontrollable in her life network, and it also gives a new impact on the treatment and prevention of women’s diseases as well as the prevention and treatment of women’s reproductive health.

Free Beauty Product Samples

elaine_hammond_personal_health_coach

This post was written by Elaine Hammond, a busy mom with three children a dog named Bubbles, and a cat named Cat. She lives with her family in , .

Because money really doesn’t grow on trees, isn’t it nice to get free samples of products? There is so much to choose from but the problem that I’ve always had has been finding the time to visit all the sites to get name brand product samples. There is so much to choose from:

The big one on my list has always been dental product samples. With three kids, toothbrushes fly off the counter and toothpaste is always sought after.

free-product-samplesI’ve managed to get toothbrushes sent out to me as my kids were growing. It was simple – visit the companies website and enquire about their products. They would gladly send out samples to me and give me coupons to buy their products at tremendous discounts! Imagine being able to buy a toothbrush that retails for $5.00 on sale and then an additional discount through the use of their coupon. I was able to buy brand name toothbrushes and dental products for almost nothing.

Using product samples, I was probably able to save about $500 per year on my grocery bill.

free-makeup-samplesBut once I had my second, and third child – time was in short supply. It wasn’t as easy to get onto the computer and look for quality samples or coupons that were good. What I got in the mail was what the companies were trying to sell in my demographic. If there were no young children, that meant no coupons for diapers or other baby products.

Then I found a few websites that allowed me to get free samples of products, like beauty product samples by giving them an e-mail address and filling out a short form. I don’t have time for forms, and was a little hesitant to complete them but then I spoke to a friend at a drop-in play date at my local community center and she showed me the coupons she received and the types of products that she was getting… well, my mind was made up.

Once we were done, I headed straight home and started looking for the services I had seen and subscribed to a few of them. Today I get all the samples I need, and by filling out the surveys I get exactly what I need. No more samples of beauty products or hair care products that I will never use – only things that my family and I will use and great coupons to go with them.

If you want to get high quality beauty product samples, household product samples or if you have teens at home - free stuff for teens then you owe it to yourself and your family to sign-up to receive these free name brand product samples. You will not be disappointed!

Watch for more informative posts from Elaine, who has agreed to share her expertise on a wide range of topics with you.

Top 3 Tips On How To Get Rid Of A Yeast Infection

Personal Health CoachHere are my top 3 tips on how to get rid of a yeast infection. They are based on sex, diet and hygiene. To really understand why these 3 tips work so well you first need to understand the root cause of yeast infections, and the underlying conditions that can ‘trigger’ them. You’ll get all that here.

Yeast infections are caused by a yeast type fungus called Candida Albicans. This occurs naturally in us, but is kept under control by our beneficial bacteria. However, under certain conditions the flora can ‘overgrow’ out of control and cause the symptoms of a yeast infection.

The underlying conditions that can help trigger this overgrow are things like; antibiotics, pregnancy, contraception, bad diet, diabetes, poor hygiene and a lowered immune system, etc.

Now that you know the cause and triggers, you’ll have a better understanding of how my top 3 tips on how to get rid of a yeast infection can be effective…

1. Do not have sex with a yeast infection

Although sex itself doesn’t cause yeast infections, it can transfer it to a partner. Not only that, once the partner has it, it can be transferred back again. This is why so many women and men complain about recurring yeast infections after sex.

One of the main problems is that mainstream drug-based topical creams, pessaries etc., only attack the symptoms and not the root cause of yeast infections. You think you’re cured, but only your symptoms have gone, the root cause remains.

So when you have sex thinking everything is okay, your infection flares up again. You need to stop having sex until your infection is completely cleared up. Note that a condom may help, but only a little, since some spermicides can actually encourage the fungus. No, it’s best to stop sex altogether I’m afraid!

2. Cut refined sugars out of your diet

Refined sugar (white) is a great food for the Candida yeast fungus, helping it to grow. So that where the body has higher levels of sugars (e.g. in pregnancy, with diabetes, poor diet, etc.) the yeast has more to feed on and thus multiply. You need to reduce or cut out refined sugars from your diet. Of course this includes candy, etc.

3. Don’t use deodorant sprays and douches in and around the vagina

Sprays containing scents, fragrances etc. can irritate sensitive areas like the vagina. Areas inflamed in this way are a breeding ground for the fungus to take hold and grow.

Douching can upset the careful balance of good bacteria and yeast fungus. When this gets out of kilter, the result is a yeast infection.

These 3 tips on how to get rid of a yeast infection, whilst very important, can only be part of the complete solution. Not only do you have to get rid of the symptoms, you need to eliminate the root cause and address the ‘triggers’ mentioned above. But drug-based treatments really only address the symptoms.

Which is why thousands of women around the world have turned to a totally natural system that has cured their yeast infection fast and permanently.

To get the facts on how to get rid of yeast infection using this totally natural treatment please go to how-to-get-rid-of-a-yeast-infection.blogspot.com and you could be yeast infection free in as little as 12 hours.
